About Us
Brush Strokes began back in the autumn of 1981, starting with a first job at the Millersdale mill with Nick and Fran Davidson. That’s where the ball started rolling. The name Brush Strokes came from the 1970s sitcom — Karen suggested it, it stuck, and it felt right from day one.
In 1984, the journey moved to New Zealand, working at McDonald & Dons on Great North Road, Auckland. With limited facilities for mixing paint, the trade was learnt the hard way — by hand, by eye, and through experience. Those years shaped the standard Brush Strokes is known for today.
After returning to the UK, the first major job was the exterior of the Moon Inn — a big job, plenty of prep, and done solo. From there, the team began to grow. Gary Maddison joined as the first apprentice, followed by Clive, Paul, Alan, and eventually yourself. Each brought skill, character, and plenty of good times along the way.
Brush Strokes built its reputation across a strong local area, known for quality work, solid preparation, and finishes that lasted. Even through tough periods like the 2007 banking problems, the team stayed busy — proof that good workmanship keeps you working.
Today, Brush Strokes is owned and run by Matthew Carnell, continuing the same values the business was built on: proper preparation, honest work, and a finish you can be proud of. The name, the history, and the standard remain the same — exceptional decorating, done properly.
